Dryer symptoms overlap. A machine that will not heat, takes two cycles to dry, makes noise, shuts off early or smells hot can have very different causes depending on the model, fuel type and airflow.
These guides explain the most common failure patterns we see in the field, what a homeowner can safely check, and what usually requires testing inside the dryer.
Dryer troubleshooting guides
Dryer takes too long to dryAirflow restrictions, weak heat, blower problems and sensor cycles.
Dryer squeaking, thumping or grindingRollers, idler pulley, belt, glides, blower and motor-related noise.
Gas dryer not heatingIgniter, flame sensor, gas-valve coils and burner sequence.
Dryer starts, then stopsMotor overheating, airflow, thermal protection, wiring and controls.
Dryer overheating or burning smellLint buildup, airflow, drive parts, motor heat and electrical problems.
What these guides are for
They are not a parts-replacement checklist. Two dryers with the same symptom can fail for different reasons. A no-heat complaint, for example, can come from the heat source itself, a safety device, airflow, wiring, a sensor or a control. A loud dryer can have a worn roller, idler, belt, blower wheel, motor or a foreign object in the drum area.
Local Appliance Repair diagnoses gas and electric dryers across the Los Angeles Westside and South Bay. We work on freestanding dryers, stacked washer/dryer pairs, laundry centers and compact laundry installations from major and premium brands.
Safe checks before scheduling service
- Clean the lint screen and make sure it is installed correctly.
- Confirm the dryer has power and that the breaker has not tripped.
- For a gas dryer, confirm the gas supply was not intentionally turned off.
- Check whether the exterior vent flap opens when the dryer is running.
- Write down any error code and note exactly when the symptom happens.
Stop using the dryer if you smell burning, see smoke, hear severe metal-on-metal grinding, notice scorching, or smell unburned gas. Do not bypass thermal fuses, door switches or other safety devices.
