An intermittent dryer can be harder to diagnose than a completely dead one. If it starts normally and then stops, the timing of the shutdown matters: immediately, after several minutes, only under a heavy load, or only after the dryer is hot.
Common causes include a motor that overheats, restricted airflow, thermal protection opening, a loose electrical connection, a door-switch problem, a failing control or a component that changes behavior as it warms up.
Motor overheating
A dryer motor can run when cold and shut down after internal temperature rises. After cooling, it may start again. Heavy drum drag from worn rollers, a tight idler or another mechanical problem can also increase motor load.
Airflow and temperature
Restricted airflow makes the dryer run hotter. Depending on the design, excessive temperature can trip thermal protection or create control behavior that stops the cycle. A blocked vent is therefore relevant even when the complaint sounds electrical.
Door switch and wiring
A worn door switch, loose connector or damaged wire can open as the cabinet vibrates. Intermittent wiring faults often require reproducing the symptom rather than relying on a quick continuity check while everything is stationary.
Electronic controls and timers
Relays, control boards and timers can fail intermittently. Before condemning an expensive control, the power supply, motor circuit, switches, wiring and temperature-related causes should be checked.
What to note before service
- How many minutes the dryer runs before stopping.
- Whether it restarts immediately or only after cooling.
- Whether the drum was heavily loaded.
- Whether the dryer feels unusually hot.
- Any error code, unusual smell or noise before shutdown.
When to stop using it
Stop if the dryer smells hot or electrical, repeatedly trips the breaker, makes severe mechanical noise, or the cabinet temperature is abnormal. Repeatedly restarting a dryer with an overheating motor or restricted airflow can turn a repairable problem into a larger one.
How we diagnose intermittent shutdowns
We reproduce the failure when possible, check airflow and operating temperature, inspect drum drag and motor behavior, verify power and wiring, and then test the switches and controls relevant to the model.
